Oldest Cemetery: If the walls of the St. Louis No. 1 Cemetery could talk, they would speak of a history as rich as the city in which they stand. Established in 1789, the St. Louis No. 1 Cemetery has seen the likes of over 100,000 dead, and is the city’s oldest cemetery that is still in operation.

Famous Tombs: The St. Louis No. 1 has served as the final resting place of some of New Orleans most prominent figures, including Homer Plessy, and the Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau. See the future gravesite of actor Nicolas Cage, and other lavish crypts, scattered among the tragically beautiful, cracked and crumbling tombs that make the St. Louis No. 1 one of New Orleans’ must-see attractions.

Open Only To Tour Groups: Closed to the public, the St. Louis No. 1 can be experienced only alongside an Archdiocese-approved, licensed tour guide.

Unique Burial Customs: On a one-mile walking tour that lasts about 90 minutes to two hours, your guide will discuss some general New Orleans history, and the history of the cemetery, including the reasons we have for our bizarre, and ultra-specific burial practices. The time spent inside of the St. Louis No. 1 will focus on the different types of tombs, and the people who’ve come to occupy them throughout history.

The cemetery tour was wonderful. I’ve been to NOLA several times over the years, but never took a formal tour like this. Our guide was knowledgeable, factual, and had actual personal ties to the St. Louis Cemetery.”
